Biography

I was born in Beverley, East Yorkshire and moved to Suffolk in 2004 to establish a painting studio in Felixstowe. I have exhibited professionally throughout England since completing my Masters degree in 1999, organizing exhibitions in both public and commercial spaces.

In 2005 I was involved with Art for Humanity, a British Red Cross initiative, taking part in an exhibition at the German Embassy to raise funds for the charity. In 2006 I was Resident Artist at Chives Montessori School and I was short listed for the Higgins Homes Public Art Award. My work experience as an Arts Administrator has included managing community arts projects and craft workshops in North Yorkshire.

My paintings are held in public and private collections throughout England including the Paintings in Hospitals Collection which contains works by contemporary and modern British artists.

Artist Statement

My painting continues in the tradition of Abstract Expressionism, utilizing primary and secondary colours and the arrangement of abstract forms to create a visible tension. Using decorator’s brushes and palette knives, I apply either oil or acrylic to build up layers of paint, creating different planes across the field of the canvas.

I like to pull apart the components of visual form and reduce them to bare gestures: lines, arcs, circles and polygons become my abstract building blocks and I experiment with glazes and beeswax to introduce an element of texture. The seemingly deep layers of coloured shapes produce a push-pull tension and linear patterning contrasts with cell-like containers. The surface of the canvas becomes a transcript of my movements and feelings and the painting captures the creative moment in all its energy.
